There are many varieties of woodpeckers all across North America. While there are common characteristics the birds of the woodpecker family share, each species can be quite unique! They range from small to large and plain to colorful. Some live in forests while others live in the desert. A versatile family of birds, and one of my personal favorites! Woodpeckers are known for their powerful beaks, long tongues, sometimes flashy colors, and their excellent climbing skills.

More than bird species can be found in Kenya. The bird species I have photographed so far are mostly the common and conspicuous species, especially those that inhabit towns and farmlands. Many of these birds are ones the bird watcher will encounter on nearly every outing. If a single family of birds has more than a few species depicted, Doves , for example, I have created a separate index page with all the doves together.

This is an ongoing project. We are adding more New Zealand Birds to this list with every newsletter. Today they are quite common and widespread throughout both islands.

Birds in the Yard. Identifying Mostly Gray-colored birds in the yard Perhaps "gray" sounds drab when identifying birds in the yard, but the plumage is surprisingly lovely. Some mostly gray-colored birds in the yard live with us year-round while others come only in summer and yet others come only in winter. Our most common mostly gray-colored yard bird is the Tufted Titmouse. Pinkish underwing plumage shows most readily in flight.
